Cilliers and I were invited by Vivid Luxury to attend the Veuve Cliquot Masters Polo 2017 on Saturday 4 March. It is a sought-after highlight on the South African social calendar and is regarded as one of the best polo events in the world.

The Veuve Cliquot Masters Polo event is “an infusion of chic fashion, fast chukkas and the finest champagne,” as promised by Veuve Cliquot, and held at the breathtaking Val De Vie Estate in the Paarl valley every year. It is all about the glitz and glamour, luxurious lifestyles, the fashion, and the extravagance of a polo match.

When it comes to the event’s fashion, which is just as important as the horses, I always think of the polo scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts asked, “What do I wear?”. I didn’t have to stress about this for too long, because I was lucky enough to have been dressed by H&M South Africa. The dress code and theme for this year was ‘Cruise Collection’ and I felt chic and confident in my crisp white dress with its cheeky pleats, and a touch of black detail in the belt and neckline, adding that extra panache. Cilliers looked dashing in his light summer suit (J Crew) and white shirt (Woolworths). When we arrived, we were treated to some Veuve Cliquot, of course, and yummy canapés. While enjoying the sunshine, we socialised and had our pictures taken by the paparazzi.

A big thanks to H&M South Africa for dressing me!

Soon after the A-listers, socialites, fashionistas, and celebrities arrived, it was time for the main polo match. It was absolutely thrilling and very impressive even though I have to admit, I do not know that much about this sport. But by then I already had three glasses of champagne, so everything was impressive to me. Even so, seeing those beautiful horses running at full speed with so much force and grace, grass flying in all directions behind them, the excitement of this fast-paced game and the commentator adding even more excitement with his animated commentary, you can understand why people call polo “the sport of kings”.

There were also fun sideline festivities, and my favourite was stomping on the grass. This is a proud polo tradition and served two purposes: it allowed us, the guests, to get onto that big beautifully manicured lawn and stretch our legs, and it helped the game by repairing the divots created by the horses. It also allowed for more socialising, showing off our fashionable outfits and taking in the beautiful scenery while we enjoyed another glass of bubbly. There was also a fashion show hosted by Cape Town Mercedes Benz Fashion Week that showcased the latest trends in all things fashion, from swimwear to evening gowns.

Instead of stomping the divots, we took more photos.

More stomping fun!

If you look past the fashion and the game, I think the magic of the Veuve Cliquot Masters Polo is that is sells you an idea of luxury, a lifestyle you want. It makes you high on life and ready to chase any dream. This year it was all about taking the guests on a journey and making us feel special, fabulous and fantastic.

And our expectations were exceeded! Cheers to #VCMastersPolo for taking us on that #CliquotJourney.

I opted for a clean hair and makeup look to keep things fresh.

Hair and makeup done by me.

Keeping with the black theme I used my Celine bag to finish off the look.

Champagne and good company.

Very happy and probably a bit tipsy.
